Vettes Famous Apple Cobbler

Vettes Famous Apple cobbler is a traditional American dessert made with fresh apples and a sweet biscuit-like topping. It is a baked dish that typically consists of sliced or diced apples flavored with sugar, spices (such as cinnamon and nutmeg), and sometimes lemon juice or zest. The apple mixture is placed in a baking dish and covered with a layer of dough, often made from flour, sugar, butter, milk, or buttermilk. As it bakes, the dough rises and becomes golden brown, as a result forming a crispy and slightly caramelized crust. The apple filling becomes tender and juicy, nonetheless creating a delightful contrast in textures. Apple cobbler is commonly served a la mode; for instance, warm, and is often enjoyed with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Ingredients

4 granny smith apples, peeled, cored, sliced

4 gala apples, peeled, cored, sliced

1 and 1/2 cups sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/2 stick butter

3 teaspoons cinnamon

Dough Ingredients

4 cups flour

4 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup solid shortening

1 cup buttermilk

Directions

To make Vettes Famous Apple Cobbler, start by heating the oven to 350 degrees so it gets nice and hot. Place apples in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sugars, butter, cinnamon, and 1/3 cup of water. Cook for about 10 minutes. For the dough, mix the flour, baking powder, and the salt. Cut in the shortening until it is crumbly. Stir in just enough buttermilk to form a ball.

Putting the cobbler together

Divide the ball into 3 pieces. Roll out one piece of dough. With a knife, cut into quarter-sized rounds. Fold each round in half and bake until golden brown.

Because we’re going to use them later, set them aside for now. Roll out one piece of dough into a 10×14 rectangle. Ease the rectangle dough into a 9×13 baking dish. Pour in apples. Work the rounds into the fruit throughout the dish, as a result, you’ll have dough in each bite. Roll out the remaining dough and cut it into wide strips. Arrange the strips so they look like a basket pattern across the apples. Bake for 30 minutes. Enjoy!
